AR/VR headsets are a new category in wider culture, and companies like Apple and Meta are likely trying to avoid the negative publicity involved if an app were to exploit raw camera access for malicious purposes.
Gurman claims that Apple aims to release a cheaper Apple Vision by the end of 2025. By then, the company would be able to optimize the manufacturing process and save costs. Perhaps this is when Apple will also introduce a Vision Pro 2 with an even more powerful chip, which would allow Apple to keep selling a cheaper model with M2.
Apple has put conditions in place for long-term success, but what that success will look like is a bit of a mystery. That’s just how new computing platforms work: everyone knew that constant connectivity and information access would be hallmarks of smartphones, but nobody predicted that shared narcissism and unlicensed taxis would be killer apps.
Overall, I’m hesitant to make any broad claims about whether Apple Vision Pro is going to fulfill Apple’s claims about the onset of spatial computing. I’ve had far too little time with it and it’s not even completed — Apple is still working on things like the light shroud and definitely on many software aspects.
In many ways, Vision Pro and visionOS are the culmination of years of AR and VR features that have gradually made their way to the iPhone since ARKit’s introduction in 2017. Apple says that the iPhone is already the largest AR platform in the world, and visionOS takes advantage of many of those features.
I just walked out of a long demo session with Apple’s new $3,499 Vision Pro headset, which the company announced at WWDC 2023 as “the world’s most advanced consumer electronics device.” It’s... a really really nice VR headset with impressive displays and video passthrough. And I mean incredibly impressive displays and video passthrough: I was happily using my phone to take notes while wearing the Vision Pro, something no other headset can realistically allow.
It’s a device that will launch with Disney+, sure, but the gaming experience is currently wanting. Apple is promising something akin to playing on a big screen TV, rather than a bespoke AR/VR solution. It’s those experiences, rather than existing app ports, that this platform needs. But Pro implies the existence (or at least future existence) of a non-Pro headset. Unfortunately, while such a device has been long-rumored, we almost certainly won’t see it until late 2024 at the earliest.
Apple is likely betting the app developer community will provide it with the use cases it needs to turn the Vision Pro (and subsequent iterations) into its next big income generator – and perhaps change how we interact with this technology forever.
Until now, the most popular XR headset, the Meta Quest 2, was all about VR. Yes, lately some AR arrived, but still, the majority of content is VR games. The Vision Pro entered the game saying “you can do VR, but it’s much better to be in AR as much as you can, so you are not isolated from the environment and the people around you”. Tim Cook expressly mentioned augmented reality, but never said virtual reality.
