Apple is likely betting the app developer community will provide it with the use cases it needs to turn the Vision Pro (and subsequent iterations) into its next big income generator – and perhaps change how we interact with this technology forever.
A page on Apple's developer site outlines what Apple will do between now and Vision Pro's launch to help developers get their apps ready. Most notably, the company will offer a Vision Pro developer kit, which will be hardware that will "provide the ability to quickly build, iterate, and test on Apple Vision Pro so your app or game will be ready to deliver amazing experiences." The kits will be available by application only.
Until now, the most popular XR headset, the Meta Quest 2, was all about VR. Yes, lately some AR arrived, but still, the majority of content is VR games. The Vision Pro entered the game saying “you can do VR, but it’s much better to be in AR as much as you can, so you are not isolated from the environment and the people around you”. Tim Cook expressly mentioned augmented reality, but never said virtual reality.
Take a step back: what's the end goal? In the long term, Apple wants this type of device to become ubiquitous, replacing the phone and laptops. But XR headsets are still very new to most of the population. Showing complex games, an obscure "Metaverse", or intricate business uses is not going to engage new users.
Apple explained that existing apps designed for the iPad will work on visionOS, the operating system powering the Vision Pro, without any changes. But those iPad apps will be displayed within a metaphorical window, losing much of the functionality provided by mixed reality.
Unlike other headset ecosystems, though, Apple is promising hundreds of thousands of apps on day one, a feat it’s able to pull off thanks to work on other platforms. Apple will automatically convert iPad and iPhone apps to “a single scalable 2D window” that works on the Apple Vision Pro — with no work required from developers unless they want to make any changes.
On the front side, the headset looks pretty cool, like a pair of elegant ski goggles. I totally love how they implemented what we tech guys called “reverse passthrough” but they renamed it as the fancier EyeSight. This makes VR more human and less isolating for the people that are with us: if someone is around you, the headset displays your eyes in an optical-correct way, so these people can have a more human relationship with you. This is great.
Vision Pro is positioned as primarily an AR device, but it can switch between augmented and full virtual reality using a dial. The device is controller-free, and you browse rows of app icons in an operating system called visionOS by looking at them.
After spending 30 minutes with the Vision Pro, my reaction is more tempered than that excitable attendee. It's undoubtedly the best mixed reality (VR/AR) experience I've had yet, delivering an unparalleled sense of immersion, with displays sharp enough to read text on websites, plus an intuitive gesture-based user interface. And yet, it's still just a VR headset, with many of the issues endemic to the entire category.
